Privacy Policy for jot Chrome extension
Last updated: [Oct 23, 2025]
Thank you for using jot (the “Extension”). Your privacy is very important to us. This Privacy
Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our Chrome extension.
1. Overview
jot is a Chrome extension designed to help users take, organize, and save notes while watching
YouTube videos. We respect your privacy and are committed to being transparent about our data practices.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties.
- We collect only the minimal data necessary for the extension to function properly.
- All notes and data created through the extension are stored locally in your browser unless you
explicitly choose to sync them to your own cloud service (if available).
2. Information We Collect
We collect only the information necessary to operate and improve the Extension.
a. Information You Provide
- Notes and related content: Any notes you create, edit, or delete using the Extension are stored
locally in your browser’s storage.
- Settings and preferences: If you change settings (e.g., theme, keyboard shortcuts, or sync
preferences), these are stored locally as well.
b. Automatically Collected Information
- Extension performance data: We may collect anonymous usage data such as which features are used
most often. This helps us understand how to improve the Extension.
- Error logs: If the Extension encounters an error, anonymized technical information (like the
error type or browser version) may be sent to us to help diagnose problems.
This data is never linked to your YouTube account, browsing history, or identifiable personal information.
3. Permissions Used by the Extension
The Extension may request certain Chrome permissions to function correctly:
- tabs — to detect active YouTube tabs and allow note-taking linked to specific videos.
- storage — to save your notes and settings locally or in your synced Chrome profile.
- activeTab — to access limited information (like the current video title or URL) when you are on
YouTube, for linking notes to the right video.
We do not access your browsing history, YouTube credentials, or any unrelated websites.
4. How We Use Information
- Provide and maintain the core functionality of the Extension.
- Improve usability, performance, and reliability.
- Diagnose and fix bugs or errors.
- Respond to support requests (if you contact us directly).
We do not use the data to track your behavior or deliver ads.
5. Data Storage and Security
- Local Storage: Notes and user preferences are stored locally in your browser (via Chrome
storage). This means only you have access to them.
- Cloud Sync (if enabled): If you enable Chrome Sync, your data may also be stored securely in your
Google account as part of Chrome’s built-in sync feature. We do not have access to that data.
- No External Servers: The Extension does not send your notes or personal information to any
external server controlled by us or a third party.
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information from unauthorized
access or disclosure.
6. Data Sharing and Disclosure
- We do not share, sell, or rent your personal information to anyone.
- We may disclose anonymized or aggregated data (for example, feature usage statistics) for analytics or
technical improvement — but this data cannot identify you.
- We may disclose information only if required by law or to comply with legal obligations (e.g., a court
order or valid government request).
7. Third-Party Services
The Extension may interact with YouTube solely to retrieve public video metadata (e.g., video title, channel
name, or timestamp). We do not collect or store any information from your YouTube account.
If the Extension includes optional integrations (for example, exporting notes to Google Drive, Notion, or
another app), such features will:
- Be explicitly opt-in.
- Use only the permissions necessary for that service.
- Be covered by that service’s own privacy policy once you connect your account.
We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party websites or services.
8. Your Rights and Choices
- View or delete notes: You can view or delete any notes you’ve created at any time directly
through the Extension.
- Remove the extension: You can uninstall the Extension from Chrome at any time. This will delete
all locally stored data.
- Chrome Sync management: If you enabled Chrome Sync, you can manage or delete synced data from
your Google Account settings.
If you have questions or want to request deletion of any data we may hold (e.g., support emails), please
contact us.
9. Children’s Privacy
The Extension is not intended for use by children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect any
personal information from children.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal data, please contact us and we
will delete it promptly.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
- Update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
- Post the revised version in the Chrome Web Store listing and on any linked website.
- Continued use of the Extension after changes means you accept the updated policy.
